Frequently Asked Questions

When will Tender be open in Canberra?

We are currently negotiating the details for a potential site. We will let you know our opening schedule as soon as we can. To stay in the loop, join our newsletter list or follow us on Facebook or Instagram.

What sort of funerals will Tender provide?

A Tender funeral is one that is authentic and appropriate to the person engaging us. For some people, this will mean a faith-based funeral in a place of worship. For others, it could be a direct cremation and a barbeque afterwards at the park, or anything else they can imagine. Tender welcomes people from all faiths, all backgrounds and all beliefs. What is important to us is what is important to you. Please view Our Services to see what sorts of things we will be offering once we’re operational or contact us to discuss the options that are right for you.

How much do your funerals cost?

We will publish specific price lists as we become operational. Tender is transparent in our pricing and will present you with all the options so you’re empowered to make the decision that’s right for you. Beyond the minimum requirements needed to support you, any additional options are completely up to you.  You may even have your own ideas or approaches, and we can help you determine how to achieve them.  We will also be able to connect families in financial need to a range of funding options to help cover funeral costs and are also able to support families through our ‘Pay it Forward’ Benevolent Fund. All our services are provided at cost.

Do I have to use a cardboard coffin?

Only if you want to! Many Tender clients value cardboard coffins for their low price, lower environmental impact, and their ability to be decorated and personalised. However, we also provide a range of other coffins for you to choose from and you are welcome to supply your own coffin as well. We can also talk to you about the options for using shrouds.

Is Tender run entirely by volunteers? What about the funeral directors?

Tender is operated by a combination of paid professional staff and volunteers. We have paid professionals in key roles, like our funeral directors, who are supported by volunteers. Our volunteers support us in a range of activities, from admin and transport to community outreach and assisting the funeral directors. There are so many ways to be involved. If you are interested in either working for or volunteering for Tender Funerals Canberra Region, please contact us.

Do I have to have a funeral service? Do I have to have a funeral director?

No, and no; there is a lot more choice available than many people realise. At Tender, we want the community to feel empowered and know what to do when someone dies. We can help as little or as much as is right for you.  Once we’re open, we’ll provide a full list of the services and support we can provide. In the meantime, please visit our resources page or if you’d like to talk about what choices are available to you, why not come to our next Tender Talk? These are opportunities for people to meet at a cafe and talk with each other and a Tender team member over a cuppa about all these sorts of things. You can find the information for our next Tender Talk on our Events page.

What geographic area will Tender Funerals Canberra Region service?

We will generally be servicing the area within approximately 90 minutes drive from Canberra, which includes towns like Yass, Cooma, Goulburn, Braidwood and Bungendore. We may be able to service other areas, but there would be additional costs. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

Why does a funeral home run community events?

Because death is something that happens to everyone and we should all be able to help our community when it happens. We run events because we want to help people feel confident they will know what to do when someone dies or is dying. Once we’re operational, we will also offer social events, like craft circles or choirs, where people can come together after a death and be part of a community who have shared something similar. If you would like us to run an event for you, or be part of something you’re organising, please contact us.

How does Tender keep their costs down?

We operate at cost, which means we cover our reasonable costs and pay staff fairly, without making any additional profit. We are supported by a wonderful group of volunteers who help with a range of activities and we actively develop partnerships with other organisations to help us deliver meaningful and affordable personalised service to our clients.

How is Tender funded?

Tender is a self-sustaining business. We cover the cost of operating through the fees we charge for our services. While we don’t aim to make a profit, we believe in financial sustainability.

Tender Funerals Canberra Region is funded through a combination of philanthropic grants, community donations and social enterprise funding.

In order to ensure financial sustainability, we also provide funerals to those who can afford to pay above the cost price. These clients make a donation to our ‘Pay It Forward’ Benevolent Fund, which we then use to reduce or remove the costs of the funerals for clients who need financial assistance.

Are there other Tenders?

Yes. The original Tender Funerals is in Port Kembla and another one has been opened by the Mid North Coast community in NSW. Many other sites are opportunities to start Tenders around the country with new enquiries coming in regularly. All Tenders operate as social franchisees under Tender Funerals Australia and share the same credo, mission and values. Learn More at Tender Funerals Australia
