At Tender Funerals, we believe funerals and funeral care should be meaningful, authentic, and affordable.
Tender Funerals is a not-for-profit funeral service that ensures that those experiencing financial hardship/distress are able to access personalised, meaningful and affordable funerals. We also provide community education and empowerment around after death care.
We provide a full range of services across after death care, funeral/celebration arrangements and body disposal options – many based on sustainable principles – which enable you to have a much greater say in how your loved one is treated after death. We encourage practices that promote healing.
A community venture, we operate in ways they do not leave community members with large debt. We don’t take shortcuts and always put people and relationships first.
Our Vision
Tender Funerals Canberra Region Working Group was established April 2019 with the aim to bring affordable, meaningful funerals to the people of the Canberra and the surrounding region. We are currently in the process identifying additional funding partners and locating a suitable premises for Tender in the Canberra Region.
The Tender Funerals Canberra Region Working Group is lso currently looking to raise community awareness of our mission and raise death literacy.
How You Can Support Tender Canberra
Tender Funerals Canberra Region welcomes financial or in kind support. If you’re interested in volunteering, have skills you’d like to bring to the table, and have the time and energy to support this work, it would be great to have you join the working group or become an advisor to the working group.
Establishing Tender Funerals Canberra Region requires all types of skills including legal support, understanding of the real estate market and renovations, community development and engagement skills, project management, marketing and media skills, funeral industry experience, and fundraising skills.

Tender: The Documentary
Our next screening will be held at Smith’s Alternative in the City on Thursday 13 May at 4.30 pm.
It will be followed by a Q & A session with several Tender Canberra Board Members.
We will also have our painted cardboard coffin to try on for size!

Tender Canberra Region Board – Our People
Bearyn
Bearyn is a public servant with experience working with communities in the Australian Kimberely, Kenya, and India. He joined the Tender Canberra Region Working Group to engage more thoughtfully with death and dying and hopes to use his experience and energy to support bringing Tender funerals to Canberra.
Catherine
Catherine can be summed up in three words: birth, death and playgrounds. Beginning as a birth doula, Catherine came to Tender after Death Walker training with Zenith Virago. She was drawn to death care after seeing the parallels with birth care. In Tender, Catherine sees the importance of experience embraced, and the process options explained and supported. And the playgrounds? With the Braidwood Community Association, Catherine helped secure a fabulous new intergenerational playground: a combination of community spirit, diplomacy and grant success
Tui
Tui has 32 years paid working experience, mostly in a variety of roles for the Australian public service – project management, governance, policy, stakeholder engagement, secretariat and workplace coaching. Currently taking a sabbatical, she is enjoying being a volunteer on two school committees (with a focus on not-for-profit, out of school hours care), a residential committee and the Tender working group. Giving back, being a part of community building and advocating for important social issues is what makes Tui happy.
Andrew
Versatile leader with a financial background and nineteen years in leading audit, advisory, and accounting roles spanning multiple countries, across the telecommunications, manufacturing, retail, regulatory and government sectors. Strong understanding of risk management, governance, business continuity and financial accounting gained through Big 4 and government experience.
Ellen
After many years in a diverse range of experiences, challenges and opportunities Ellen has landed very comfortably at Tender. She is dedicated to normalising and demystifying death by encouraging conversations in the community on all aspects of death, dying and end-of-life care.
Ellen is a firm believer in the value of education as a catalyst for change. By educating our community we can ensure that individuals are empowered to make informed choices when caring for their loved ones at end-of-life and after death. At a time when people are often vulnerable, being prepared means easier choices with better outcomes.
Vickie
After a long career in academic library and information management, Vickie now works as an end–of–life doula and death literacy educator. She believes passionately in every person’s unique need and right to the best possible care, information transparency, fairness, and support in all aspects of death and dying. Acknowledging that if people do not know their options, they do not have any, she strives to see this addressed.
