At Tender Funerals, we believe funerals and funeral care should be meaningful, authentic, and affordable.
Tender Funerals is a not-for-profit funeral service that ensures that those experiencing financial hardship/distress are able to access personalised, meaningful and affordable funerals. We also provide community education and empowerment around after-death care
We provide a full range of services across after death care, funeral/celebration arrangements and body disposal options – many based on sustainable principles – which enable you to have a much greater say in how your loved one is treated after death. We encourage practices that promote healing.
A community venture, we operate in ways they do not leave community members with large debt. We don’t take shortcuts and always put people and relationships first.

Rebecca Nind
End-of-Life Doula / Registered Nurse
I was working in the arts industry – art conservation and framing and also volunteered as a carer with the WA AIDS council which led me to university to do a degree in Nursing. Working as a registered nurse for the last 13 years, I have had the privilege of being there for patients and families at the end of life. I have found this very rewarding but have also found that not being prepared and informed can be most distressing at this very important transitional time for all involved. I practice as an EOL Doula as I am passionate about the end of life journey and support the best possible journey at this time. I hope through our work up we can bring this service to community for community.
MARGARET YANDELL
Born in Alice Springs – lives in Cairns
Over 30 years working in the Disability and Human Services sector. Current Manager at the Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre (12.5 years) with a Bachelor of Arts, Human Services. With a strong focus on social justice and community development is committed to working towards more affordable, responsive, accessible and socially just options for people in Far North Queensland and did the Deathwalker training in August 2019.
Fran Hynes
Long term resident of Kuranda Qld.
Volunteer for Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre (KNC) since 2008. Past President and active member of the KNC Management Committee. Retired Radiographer and current Bowen Therapist and did the Deathwalker training in August 2019.
Justine Schlict
Has a strong background in performing arts and running circus workshops for kids (and adults) for over 20 years. Is currently studying Feldenkrais Therapy, has been informally supporting local families when someone dies helping to make arrangements etc and did the Deathwalker training in August
Tammie Blythe
Art therapist running workshops in Kuranda and Tablelands. She has been a KNC volunteer for 2 years, hails from Perth/WA and did the Deathwalker training in August.
Jo Bartholomew
Is a psychotherapist and counsellor with Cairns Counselling . She also administrates The Art of Living Well and Dying Wise facebook page. She did the Deathwalker training, runs Death Cafes and other workshops/events enabling discussions about death and dying. She has been trying to get some energy into this space in Far North Qld for some years and is excited to be involved in this new phase.
Rinchen Kelly
A Buddhist nun (for nearly 20 years) and runs the Khacho Yulo Ling Buddhist Centre in Cairns. Rinchen has supported many people in end of life and funeral situations as well as other support activities through meditation and discussion
Karen Jones
A long time local who works in the film industry around site management for film and television (recent project was Total Control – ABC TV series starring Debra Mailman and Rachel Griffiths directed by Rachael Perkins in Winton). Karen has had personal experience in this area, wants to participate in community development and did the Deathwalker training in August.
Vina Duplock
A very long time personal friend of mine. Is a birth doula, works for the QLD Government Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women as a contract officer supporting funded services. She has a background in Disability, Human Rights and Affordable housing (having sat on the Boards of Rights in Action (Disability Advocacy) and Shelter Housing Action Cairns (SHAC)) and did the Deathwalker training in August.
