Our Vision

Tender Funerals Illawarra and Sydney is located in Port Kembla, serving a two-hour radius, including southern Sydney.  We have been in operation since 2016 and have delivered hundreds of personalised, meaningful funerals in that time.

Tender Funerals is a not-for-profit funeral service that ensures that those experiencing financial hardship/distress are able to access personalised, meaningful and affordable funerals

Tender Funerals is part of the community movement towards reclaiming the rites around death and dying, one of life’s most important experiences. For those who want to participate in this last significant rite of passage, it can be an enriching and life-affirming experience. We hope to empower people to take control of their dying, their deaths and their funerals.

We offer a caring, compassionate and highly personalised approach to after death care, funeral/celebration arrangements and body disposal options and can assist you to carry out these loving, time-honoured practices either in your own home or somewhere else with personal significance, or we can care for your loved one on your behalf at our premises in Port Kembla.

Tender Illawarra – Our People

Amy Sagar

Funeral Director / General Manager

Amy’s career as a funeral director started in 2008. She has worked as a funeral administrator and traditional funeral director including arranging, conducting and caring for our dead in the mortuary. She truly found her passion working in the mortuary and went on to study Embalming. She is passionate about empowering families and their communities after a death has occurred and loves facilitating ceremonial washings & dressings of the deceased with their family.

Amy joined the Port Kembla community in opening Tender Funerals in 2016 as the Funeral Director and is now the manager of Tender Funerals Illawarra & Sydney.

Nadine Giles

Funeral Director

Nadine volunteered with Tender for 12 months in 2017. When Nadine moved to Melbourne she worked as a traditional funeral director before relocating back to the Illawarra to rejoin her family as well as our Tender Community as a Funeral Director.

Nadine is passionate about ritual, symbolism and ceremony and the peace, calm and joy these practices can bring to celebrating our lives and eventual death. Nadine supports families and their community to create the funeral experience that most suits their needs. She also brings her skills in hairdressing and beauty therapy to pamper the deceased in our care.

Jade Kelly

Jade is a qualified social worker with values that align with Tender’s culture. She has great passion in assisting bereaved families to create a meaningful and individualised experience.

Jade will work to empower families and communities with great transparency and integrity throughout the whole process of arranging a funeral for their loved one.

Jade is also a community liaison officer who is able to arranging education seminars for community groups around death and after-death care options.

Christine Costello

Funeral Director

Christine has worked in the Traditional Funeral industry since 2016. She has extensive experience in all aspects of her role as Funeral Director, from arranging the funeral, to bringing a loved one into our care and transferring them with the dignity and respect that they deserve. Her love of ritual first began when she worked in Cyprus as an archaeological illustrator. It was here that she realised grief transcends not only ethnicities, but time as well.

Christine’s previous work with overseas students has honed her communication skills. She will ensure you understand every aspect of the process and will listen to your needs. She has built a relationship with various churches and celebrants throughout the Illawarra and is happy to liaise with them on your behalf.

Lee-Ann Wein

Funeral Director

Lee-Ann has worked in the funeral industry for approximately eight years. Lee-Ann’s love of funeral liturgy and ritual came from her community experiences in Catholic Religious Life, where she witnessed beautiful community care of the dying and the dead. Here she learnt that the fullness of the funeral liturgy creates a meaningful and beautiful ritual, where the person and their soul is honoured by the community. This experience of ritual can really influence how grief unfolds for individuals and for communities.

Lee-Ann now lives a contemplative life committed to simplicity and service in the tradition of the Beguines. Her work at Tender is part of this service. Lee-Ann is currently studying to become a Spiritual Director. She holds a great love and interest in all religious faiths.
